“My name is Selena.” She smiled at them cheerfully. “I’m an Acolyte of the Great Mother Goddess-which means I’m a Priestess, of sorts, but one who’s not very high in the social order. I was sent here because the Goddess sensed something wrong with this ship, and because She knew there would be spirits aboard. Your kind has a lot of enemies, unfortunately.”
A Hound slammed itself against the shield she’d placed over the door, then retreated before she could shoot it, and Selena muttered a curse under her breath. “I hope Marina and Mother get here soon… I only learned how to make a shield a few weeks ago, and they’re not all that strong yet…”

Selena, a young were snow leopard slave living in the Arena. She has the ability to control air, but it has been greatly limited by the King’s Warlocks by a collar around her neck that also keeps her from taking her human form. Because of her inability to use her powers, she has instead been honing her fighting skills in order to survive in the Arena.
Her clothing consists of little more than carefully placed leather strips, and her preferred method of fighting as with the sword.
-
“Or stop them from pursuing our friend here.” Dropping down from the tree, Selena smiled at the wolf. “Hello, there. It’s all right, you’re safe here with me. None of them will ever touch you again.”
Her eyes turned blue again as the wind picked up, more violent this time, sending the wolf’s pursuers tumbling away and out of sight.
-
Bursting into the room, Selena kicked out at the Hound jumping for the girl, sending it flying as the girl herself stumbled backwards into her friend. Landing in a crouch, Selena leveled her bow, grabbed an arrow, nocked it and fired all in the space of a few seconds.
The arrow was followed by another two, rapidly sinking into the Hound’s chest as it leaped towards her, and then falling to the ground as it turned into black smoke. With a sigh of relief, Selena quickly erected a shield over the door before looking at the girl with a smile.
“Sorry about that-these things are running rampant around here.” She smiled as she helped them up.
-
Still fighting laughter herself, Selena settled on the branch next to her, smiling broadly. “I haven’t had that much fun in years! As much as I loved training to be a Guardian, I didn’t really have much time for playing tricks. That, and I… may have tarred and feathered a superior of mine a few years back…”
-
Selena purred, stretching her arms over her head. “Gladly. Lady Rakelle is going to be mad at me for using her Element, but oh well. This will be fun…”
Hovering over the lake, well out of sight of the men, she began whipping the water with the wind, hitting it harder and harder as the men began staggering backwards. Using her winds to lift and shape it, Selena created a larger version of the wolf that they had been hunting, making it step towards them, then howl loudly, creating a haunting sound that had the men all scared witless-and wetting themselves from fear.
Wondering why they hadn’t run away yet, Selena examined them, then burst out laughing-they were that scared that they had lost consciousness! Separating some of the water from the ‘wolf’, Selena hovered it over them before letting go, soaking them all.
-
Selena grinned. The Nymph woman really did know what she was doing! Quickly, she began setting up simple traps-removing dirt from under roots so the men would trip over them, making branches hit them in the face, little things that were easily ignored and explained away-all so that it could be built up to something much, much bigger…
-
Selena blinked, surprised at how quickly the nymph could move, then called on the wind to lift her up and carry her over the trees to where the hunting party was sniping at the wolf. Settling down, she frowned at the sight of them trying to terrify the animal. “Humans. So primitive at times.”
With a wave of her hand, she made a shield over the wolf, protecting it from the weapons that the men held before removing the worst of them with a light tug from the wind. With that done, she grinned at the nymph. “Would you like first shot at them…?”
-
Selena smiled at her new ‘friend’, and then closed her eyes. “Give me a moment-I may be able to find someone we can play some tricks on…” The breeze around them picked up, and then shot away from them-although Selena kept her own personal wind, which usually acted as a shield-close to her. She never went anywhere outside of her home without it, not wanting to trust anything to fate.
When she opened her eyes, they were pure blue, and her voice had a sing-song note to it that was normally absent. “Ten humans located five miles south. They are currently hunting a winged wolf. Aid for the wolf is requested immediately.”
A shake of her head, and Selena was back again, smacking the side of her head with the palm of one hand. “Ack. Hate it when She does that. Well, that answers that question.” A breeze lifts her up off of the branch, setting her down so that she was stood on it instead. “Do you want to come along…? It looks as if this trick feast may be partly work for me, though…”
-
Selena laid her ears and whiskers flat back against her head, feeling a bit awkward now. “I get the feeling I’ll be learning them during my time here. And an Air Elemental always has a few tricks up her sleeve-we wouldn’t be considered a true Snow Leopard without them.”
It was true-at the age of ten, she had been set the task of playing a trick on the current Disciple of Earth, an Iriomote Wildcat female named Marina. Out of all the Earth Elementals, Marina was considered to be the grumpiest-and the scariest-of them all, so at first, Selena had been scared witless of her. In the end, she came up with an ingenious trick that she implemented right before Marina was due to have a meeting with the Goddess and the other Disciples.
Marina had walked right into it, and had ended up covered in tar, feathers, and flour-Selena had decided to go all out on her-and because she was expected in the next few minutes, she was forced to go to the meeting still covered in the mess. A mess that had had all members of the meeting laughing every time they saw the three thousand year old female for the next six months, and the Goddess Herself was still prone to fits of laughter when She saw Marina now.
Now that she thought about it, Selena guessed that that was probably why she’d been posted to such an out of the way area of the planet…
-
Selena laughed. “My people don’t have that kind of interaction with others, I’m afraid-we don’t need to. But I can imagine it would be fun to watch!” She fell quiet a moment, then felt herself turn red under her facial fur. “Well, maybe if I’d seen a naked human male before… I remove their trousers, but never go any further with them…”
One hand rubbed at the back of her neck-as the current youngest of her people, Selena was considered to be nothing more than a child. Most of the other Elementals were much, much older than she was after all…
-
Selena laughed. “I admit, I do enjoy making humans lose their clothing! It’s always fun watching them try to catch their trousers or some particularly embarrassing item that they shouldn’t have taken off in the first place.”
Green eyes sparkled with amusement as she grinned. “Even more fun is then making them trip and fall flat on their faces to reveal said item missing. But I only do that to particularly nasty ones-you know, the ones that have really earned a good humiliation.”
-
Selena’s smile was a bit more serious now as she replied. “I shall be joining you in those tricks, if that’s all right. My orders from the Goddess are to protect this forest however I can-without revealing my identity.” Her smile turned a little evil as she continued: “Of course, that means I have full rein to do whatever I like to them-within reason, that is. Bruises are fine, broken limbs are not, apparently.”
And didn’t that bring back memories! One in particular was of when she’d caught a human child deliberately beating a puppy for not doing what he wanted it to. By the time she’d finished, the puppy was completely healed-and the child had been black and blue in several places. Selena was a firm believer in ‘you reap what you sow’, and likely always would be.

Selena shot one of the Hounds with her bow as she lowered the shield before the Nine Tailed Fox, grateful for any help as Rakelle battered another of the large dogs with a series of kicks and punches that were almost impossible to see. Once defeated, the Hound simply dissipated into a cloud of black smoke that gradually disappeared-not that it stopped Rakelle from moving on to the next one any quicker.
Having spread her senses through the ship, Selena knew the instant that the ghost girl came under attack from the Hounds, and, not even hesitating, she whirled and ran from the fight, frantic to reach her as quickly as she could. “Rakelle! There’s a girl under attack-I’m going to help her!”
“Selena, wait! Don’t go without… Marina.” Rakelle was left on her own with the remaining Hounds and the other woman, an exasperated look on her face. “That girl has no patience at all-just like her mother. You wouldn’t think she was only three months old, though.” She sighed, and whirled into a flying kick that sent a nearby Hound flying up into the ceiling, denting the materials there before it dissipated into black smoke again. “Larina’s not going to be happy about this…”
-
Selena smiled at her-it was good to have someone she could talk to properly here. “No, you didn’t make her, but you did attract other predators to her meal. Still, never mind that now. As for my Guardianship here…”
Her mind turned to the Temple, high up in the mountains where her kind lived. “My being here to care for the forest is more of a… training thing than anything else. That, and an attempt to keep the humans from destroying more of this world. My people are a little different to the Shifters or the full cats, you see-we are truly half and half, permanently, because that’s how our Goddess made us. There’s seven different species in all, and we all have different skills-mine is the ability to control air, and with the bow.”
She lifted one hand to touch the tip of her bow, her smile playing happily around her lips. Her tail twitched as she did-she liked having someone new to talk to. “Just as an example, say you had hurt yourself in some way-I would be able to use my abilities to heal that wound, and, if we were lucky, to strengthen you so it wouldn’t happen again.”
