    A Fleeting Hearth

Days turned into weeks in a secluded, warded apartment on the city’s outskirts. The initial captivity transformed into cohabitation, then into something deeper. Helena learned of his tragic history as a Death Painting; Choso learned of her existence as a hybrid Human/Seraphim who questioned the rigid dichotomies of the sorcerers and even those closest to being like her. They were two opposites, and in their opposition, found perfect balance. Their love was a quiet rebellion against the very orders of their worlds.

It was in this temporary peace that Helena discovered she was pregnant. The news should have been impossible, a miracle—or an abomination, depending on the perspective. Choso was ecstatic, but the joy was laced with a cold, sharp guilt. He had left his brother, Yuji, in the heart of the storm.

“I must go back,” he told her one evening, his hand resting on her still-flat stomach. “Yuji needs me. I must atone for my past and secure a future for… for us.”

Helena, though afraid, understood duty. “I trust you Choso, come back to us,” she whispered, her purple wings enveloping him in a protective embrace. “Your family will be here waiting for you.”

Choso left, his heart tearing in two. His journey led him back to Yuji, and together they fought. When the immediate threat was over, he brought Yuji back with him, just in time to witness a second miracle: the birth of their triplets—Shoso, Chiyo, and Saki. The two boys and one girl, each with a faint crimson marking and wisps of black/brown hair, were a perfect blend of curse and blessing.

The joy was short-lived. A familiar, serious-faced sorcerer, Megumi Fushiguro, found their hideout. He spoke of Kenjaku’s machinations, the Culling Games, and the fate of the world. The guilt returned, heavier now. His new family was safe, but his brother was heading into an apocalypse.

He looked at Helena, surrounded by their three newborns, a silent understanding passing between them. She nodded, her eyes full of love and heartbreaking strength. “Go. Protect our future. We will be here.”

He left again, this time with Megumi and Yuji, to join the Culling Games, leaving his seraphim and their three children behind—unaware that a new life, twins (Kaito and Sora), had already begun to grow within her.
