♒• ABOUT ERIDAN •♒

Prince of Hope? Bah. More like HopeLESS.

My Eridan is based on the canon Eridan. I don’t intend for him to be altered very far from his canon appearance or personality.

Eridan is one of those sorts of people (trolls, in this case) who tries to be everything he’s not. As a troll whose feelings are very influential to him, this can either end up being a positive thing or a negative thing, and as a general rule, it is a negative thing for Eridan. He creates his own feelings of superiority to defend his fragile ego, and from that, his hatred for those he considers underneath him (practically everyone?) emerges.

Eridan’s emotions are both his strength and his weakness. He is carefully attuned to them and knows his own feelings very well, though despite that, he often becomes frightened of them anyway because he is so impulsive and doesn’t appear to think anything through all too much, and thereby allows them to get out of control. Sometimes they emerge in unpredicted ways, eventually doing a lot more to harm than help. Reasonably, a desire for revenge runs strong within him for this same reason – a lack of control over his emotion. He is easily swayed by peer pressure, and in some ways comes off as naive because of this.

Eridan is definitely not a leader. While he thinks extremely highly of himself, he is still strongly rooted as a follower and will seek out someone to remain subordinate to. This doesn’t necessarily mean he is a wimp or can’t stand up for himself… in fact that is quite the opposite. Eridan’s apparent self-confidence and arrogance, is still a facade, however, also there to protect his own fragile being.

As is probably obvious, fear is Eridan’s cardinal weakness, and he retains a lot of it for various reasons and from various sources. He is, reasonably, afraid of being bested by anyone who he considers beneath him, generally those beneath him in the blood castes, which is the primary reason for his rivalry with Sollux, as well as Sollux’s influence in other parts of his life, like his “capture” of Feferi’s affections. If Sollux were of higher blood than him somehow, he would probably hold no interest in a rivalry with him and assume that he was simply more powerful and influential because of his caste.

Thanks to Eridan’s unstable state of being, he is made more unstable by kismesissitude, and more stable by matespritship. You will see this in relationships of these natures: He will become unnecessarily anxious, even paranoid in a kismesis but trusting, relaxed, and free of worry in a matespritship. Under normal circumstances it can be assumed that a troll will not be so perturbed by kismesissitude, because it is a normal and especially natural thing for trolls. A healthy rivalry is like a good relationship. The problem with Eridan is that a rivalry creates a negative environment for him, and since he operates so strongly on emotion and fear, it grows even worse still.

Please note:

When you talk to Eridan face to face in an rp (ie: not through Trollian), I will type out the two w’s and v’s that he uses in Trollian, as well as the way he shortens gerunds and the words “of” and “and” (goin’, bein’, a’, an’).

♒• QUIRKS AND GRAMMAR •♒

– It isn’t actually established by Hussie when and why Eridan abbreviates words ending in -ing, and I haven’t really been able to look back at every single log including him to figure out. However, in order to understand the concept and avoid awkwardness (because some words, when abbreviated in this way, are confusing, such as “thing”), I have come up with a grammatically based way to determine whether or not to abbreviate.

– This concept basically revolves around the rule of gerunds. A gerund is a type of modified verb that ends in -ing. All gerunds are modified forms of a verb. For example: eating, singing, playing.

– However, there are some words that look like gerunds, but they are NOUNS instead. These ones I am pointing out are actually called deverbal nouns, meaning that while they are derived from them, they do not function as verbs. Gerunds, on the other hand, DO function as verbs, as they are verbal nouns. Examples of DEverbal nouns are outing, building, painting, fencing, sewing.

– That’s not all though! You’re probably thinking, “well, you could say ‘I’m going to be painting a picture tomorrow’ or ‘I wish I could afford this painting’, and they are functioning as different parts of speech! Yes, most deverbal nouns ending in -ing can also be used as gerunds, so the difference is that the ones that function as nouns, the ones you can say “a” or “an” before, are the ones that you will not shorten. The ones that are verbs should be shortened. Eridan is not “jumpin off a buildin”, he’s “buildin a doomsday machine”.

– There are also a few words that function simultaneously as adjectives or gerunds depending on how they are used. Some examples are electrifying, captivating, and annoying. You can be annoying, and you can also be annoying someone. As far as gerunds with adjective counterparts go, I also abbreviate them. It just feels like it makes more sense to me.

– Other things I do not abbreviate are nouns ending in -ing in any way. This includes the frequently abbreviated “thing”, “something”, “anything”, and “everything”. It’s really tempting. I know. But as long as I’m in my right mind, I don’t do it. Another example of one is “ring”, but that one is not nearly as tempting.

– Beware verbs ending in -ing without actually being gerunds… “Bring” is the best one I can think of. Bringing, on the other hand, is a gerund.

♒• ERIDAN HEADCANONS •♒

– I think of Eridan as an INFP according to the MBTI personality evaluator.

– Eridan listens to disco and sappy love songs.

– Eridan has a bad habit of not actually flirting much before suddenly admitting his feelings, whether on accident or on purpose. Additionally, he is naive in any case as far as romance goes. If someone comes on strong to him, he will end up being confused by the forwardness, and even clumsy as far as romantics go.

– Eridan uses large vocabulary words occasionally when in anything he perceives even slightly to be an argument (evidently to seem smarter).

– Eridan actually swims a lot, contrary to what Feferi says about him. He spends a lot of time in the water, he just doesn’t spend it underwater for long periods of time like most seadwellers.

– Eridan has some trouble with insomnia, though not to the degree Karkat does. He frequently swims to beaches not far from his hive to moonbathe, which often puts him to sleep.

♒• SEADWELLER HEADCANONS •♒

– Seadwellers have somewhat rubbery skin that feels cool and slightly damp to the touch, something like dolphins and stingrays. It is a bit paler than the normal grey of a troll’s skin. They also have a few small fins on their body, the main one along their spine, and very slightly webbed fingers. Scales are not prominent, though there are patches of skin on their body where it feels and looks like there are some scales underneath. These are generally sensitive parts of their body to touching or rubbing, but especially to scratching (because they are usually hard to reach, and perpetually a bit itchy).

– They have small gills on their neck, and larger ones on their sides. If the gills dry out too much, they will become horribly itchy, like dry skin, and a seadweller risks damage to them if they spend too long out of water, either from scratching them inadvertently, or from them chafing against whatever clothes they are wearing.

– A seadweller’s ears are concealed within the fins on their face.

– Seadwellers almost exclusively build lean muscle, and it doesn’t show nearly as much as lean muscle does on landdwellers, so they may not look very strong, but they are physically stronger than most landdwellers from all their swimming.

– A seadweller has more flexibility than a landdweller under normal circumstances. This is due to their swimming as well as a trait that facilitates their swimming, making complicated movements in the water easy and harmless. Partially due to their flexibility, and also their muscle combined with their normal environment, they may have a certain kind of fluid movement that can be almost hypnotizing to landdwellers.

– Seadwellers generally swim doing a dolphin kick, and they move fast in the water in comparison to humans or landdwelling trolls.

♒• TROLL HEADCANONS •♒

– Blood color and heat: I think that blood color and the spectrum are related as far as temperature goes. Warm colors are warmer than cool colors, however due to the way the hemospectrum wraps around from blue back to red, I don’t entirely go by whether the color is classified as being warm or cool by artistic standards. According to this, Feferi is not the one with the coldest blood. There are a lot of warm undertones to her blood color (pink), so she actually has rather warm blood (probably about the same as Tavros or Sollux). According to this model, Karkat (true red) has the warmest blood and Equius (true blue) has the coldest blood.- Like many other people, I believe that troll horns are sensitive. However, due to the way nerves work, it is unlikely that they are sensitive anywhere besides their base, unless they have very short horns. For trolls like Karkat, Nepeta and Sollux who have short horns, it is much easier to trigger this sensitivity. If a troll were to break their horn near their head, close to an inch or so from where they grow out of their skull, it would hurt like a motherfucker. Any longer than that, and they probably wouldn’t feel anything (eg: Equius wouldn’t have been able to feel pain when his horn broke).

– Troll anatomy concerning bulges and… stuff: If we are roleplaying sexual interactions, I will probably be talking to you about this OOC, so you will most likely not need to ask. That is, unless you get to asking me before I happen to ask you!

♒• OOC/ABOUT THE AUTHOR •♒

Hello one and all!

I didn’t really expect to end up roleplaying Eridan, but here I am! Why do I love him so much?…. I’m female, and I have been roleplaying longer than many of you people have been in school. 😉 That’s a long time!

For this account, I allow short, random rps. I never did this for any of my previous roleplaying accounts. Why? Because that’s the nature of Homestuck. That wasn’t the case for my other RP situations. Homestuck is a story based around short, erratic interactions such as these. However, that does not mean I don’t take roleplaying seriously, and as such, I wouldn’t take this style of roleplay very seriously, either.

I definitely don’t mind script-form rps. However, I ask that you use your character’s typing quirks if they are typing rather than speaking. It may or may not be appropriate to add information about what the character is doing or thinking in this situation, and whether you do or not is up to your own discretion. For example, a time when this might make sense is if it is explicitly stated that the characters are video-chatting.

However, my true love is long-form, literary rp. This is roleplay that is written in a manner resembling prose, and I typically enjoy long, multi-paragraph posts. Shorter posts are appropriate, but if we do a literary style rp, I want to see at least one good sized paragraph involving a few sentences. One-liners are only okay in script based format, and depending on the character and their typing habits, there might be several sentences in separate posts. That’s just how some characters communicate. I am always looking for people to do in depth, literary rps with, and while I am a bit of a grammar nazi due to my many years of roleplaying and writing, I probably won’t bite your head off, unless you are breaking elementary grammar rules on a regular basis. 🙂 Chatspeak is ok if it is your character’s typing quirk ONLY, and it should only be used in a situation where characters are conversing with one another on the computer. If you have any ideas, short-term, long-term, developed or undeveloped for “lit” rp, let me know and we can either run with what you have or discuss some possible development to the idea.

So don’t be shy; add me as a friend and let me know you’d like to rp, especially if you are an aficionado of the long-form like I am!

Notes about requests:

I do not make friend requests very often. If I do it is probably because I feel like I need to find more people to RP with, I have read your bio and I like what I see, or I have heard good things about you. I know, that’s a lot of reasons. Basically, don’t feel offended if I don’t add you, because I so seldom send out friend requests anyway!

If you send me a friend request, I will most likely accept it. However, I will not add non-roleplaying accounts. This is a roleplaying account and I will use it for such. If I find real-life details on your profile, or your name is not that of a Homestuck character, and I don’t recognize it to be an OC, chances are very good that I will not add you. Among other accounts I will not add are accounts who are the same character as me, except under special circumstances. Talk to me if you really want me to add you in that case. Additionally, crossovers/other fandom characters will not be added, because I am not actually very familiar with a lot of fandoms, and even when I am, it is not often that I can come up with a decent rp idea involving characters from other fandoms or other universes.
