Emerald comes from a different Earth in a parallel dimension and is technically dead.

Back in her own dimension, the savage and murderous Black Lantern’s were conquering the whole galaxy. With the Black Lanterns being the power of death the more they kill the more they recruit and so their army was growing too rapidly for anyone to stop. White Lanterns with their power of life would be the ideal answer to this problem however they are very few, far between and haven’t been seen for years. In a desperate last ditch attempt to turn the tide, all the surviving members of the emotionally based Lantern Corps worked to unite their powers in the hopes of creating a White Lantern.

The first ( and only ) test was on a recently deceased Airforce pilot, as someone who was use to flying and following orders seemed to be the best choice. The combined powers yielded a positive result but not the desired one. Instead of all the powers of the spectrum unifying into one White Lantern, they divided the pilot into several copies of herself with each belonging to a different Corps. So much power concentrated in one place drew the Black Lanterns like moths to a flame. A fierce battle broke out and resulted in the pilot copies scattering along with the various Lantern Corps. Emerald is the copy that belongs to the Green Lantern Corps and fled through a portal at random to escape the onslaught having learnt very little of who she now was.

Being a Green Lantern gives her the power to fly and create light constructs from her own imagination by tapping into her willpower. Unlike others however, being created by Lanterns means she has no need to carry one with her. She need only be close to people with strong willpower to recharge.
