Umbra: City of Eternal Rain (OpaqueSugar Region)

A sprawling, gothic-inspired metropolis built to withstand constant rain. This city is eternally shrouded in rain. The inhabitants here prefer this weather due to their biological structure which requires them to live in this type of weather. Other’s who enjoy the constant rain have also made it their home.

The buildings are steep, angled roofs, elaborate drainage systems, gargoyles that serve as rain spouts. Covered walkways and elevated platforms allow travel above the flooded streets. Older sections are crumbling and prone to leaks, while newer districts are fortified and technologically advanced.

Water is abundant but some that are not properly filtered is polluted. Indoor farming is crucial, creating lush underground gardens illuminated by artificial light. Energy is derived from hydropower, but is mostly unreliable.

Those who can afford waterproof homes and access to clean water thrive. The poor live in the flooded lower levels, constantly battling dampness and disease.

A somber, melancholic atmosphere. A reverence for the rain, but also, part of the population, that doesn’t dare to move away has a deep-seated yearning for the sun. Unique art forms inspired by water and darkness. Many have paler skin due to lack of sun exposure.

Mold and fungi are rampant. Unique, bioluminescent flora thrives in the dampness. Aquatic and amphibious creatures are common, some domesticated.

The surrounding are desolate, flooded plains, barely habitable. Legends of a mythical “Sunken Valley” beyond the rain-swept horizon, where the sun still shines.

    Are you a visitor?

Is this a place where you would survive and thrive?
